How to set up ChatGPT Ads conversion tracking
Step-by-step: pixel, Conversions API, event IDs and the oppref identifier.
Specialist service
Setup, tracking and management for ads inside ChatGPT — by Jaseel M, the consultant who built ConvoPixel, the free WordPress plugin for ChatGPT Ads conversion tracking.
In brief
A ChatGPT Ads consultant sets up and runs advertising inside ChatGPT through OpenAI Ads Manager: choosing CPM, CPC or conversion-optimised (oCPC) bidding, writing context hints, building the ads, and — the part most advertisers get wrong — installing the OpenAI measurement pixel and Conversions API so every lead or sale is tracked and deduplicated. I do all of that, and I wrote the WordPress plugin that automates the tracking.
Ads in ChatGPT are sponsored placements that appear below ChatGPT's answers, labelled as ads and kept separate from the answer itself. Each ad carries the advertiser's name and icon, a title, short description, an image and a link to your landing page (OpenAI Help Center).
They are shown to people on the Free and Go plans; Plus, Pro and Business accounts do not see ads, and neither do accounts identified as belonging to under-18s. Advertising launched in the US in February 2026, self-serve CPC bidding followed in May, the UK followed in June, and 31 European markets and India were added in August 2026 (PPC Land). India launched through OpenAI's sales team and partners first, with self-serve access to follow.
The important difference from Google Ads: there are no keywords. You give the system context hints — descriptions of the conversations, topics and needs where your product is relevant — and it matches ads to conversations itself. Context hints are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee delivery in any specific conversation.
oppref click identifier preserved. It arrives on your landing-page URL after a click; the pixel stores it in a first-party cookie for 30 days. Server-side setups that drop it report conversions that cannot be attributed to any ad — the most common silent failure I see.order_created or lead_created — is firing reliably. One oCPC campaign optimises to one event, and the event cannot be changed after the campaign is created, so it has to be the right one first time.| Bidding | You pay per | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| CPM | 1,000 impressions | You want reach in a category and accept that clicks are not guaranteed |
| CPC | Click | You are starting out and want to learn which context themes bring the right visitors |
| oCPC (conversion-optimised) | Click, with the system aiming for your target cost per conversion | A standard conversion event is tracked reliably and you have enough volume for the system to learn |
OpenAI suggests starting CPC bids in the region of $3–5 per click and runs a relevance-weighted second-price auction, so the click price you actually pay depends on competition and relevance as well as your bid.
E-commerce is where I expect this channel to earn its place first, because shopping research is already one of the commonest things people do in ChatGPT. The work is mostly what you would do for Google Shopping, done earlier in the journey:
items_added, checkout_started and order_created, so you can see whether ChatGPT visitors browse and leave or actually buy.For lead generation the same applies with lead_created, appointment_scheduled or registration_completed as the event, and lead quality checked in your CRM before anyone calls the channel a success.
I would rather tell you to wait than run a test that cannot produce a reliable answer.
You set the budget. Campaigns bill per 1,000 impressions (CPM) or per click (CPC, including conversion-optimised CPC). OpenAI suggests starting around $3–5 per click, but what you pay depends on the auction. My fee is separate: a fixed price for a launch sprint or a flat monthly retainer, never a percentage of ad spend.
No. You write context hints describing where your product is relevant, and ChatGPT matches ads to conversations. Hints are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee delivery in a particular conversation.
Logged-in users on the Free and Go plans in markets where ads are live. Plus, Pro and Business users do not see ads, and neither do accounts identified as belonging to people under 18.
No individual conversations are shared with advertisers. You see aggregate delivery and performance, plus the conversions your own pixel and Conversions API report.
Yes — as a white-label specialist inside your delivery team, or as the person who sets up tracking and hands the account back. See agency partnerships.
They were not on OpenAI's list of live advertising markets at the time of writing (October 2026). I keep GCC clients informed as markets open; in the meantime the same groundwork — tracking, landing pages, offers — pays off on Google and Meta.
