Shopify Store Getting Traffic but No Sales

Traffic without sales is a symptom with half a dozen possible causes. Most store owners start with the design. The cause is usually earlier than that.

Short answer

A Shopify store with traffic but no sales usually has one of six problems, in this order of likelihood: the traffic was never likely to buy (wrong source, country or intent); sales are happening but are not tracked; product pages do not answer price, delivery and returns questions; shipping costs appear as a surprise at checkout; checkout is hard on mobile or lacks the expected payment methods; or the store does not look trustworthy enough to a first-time visitor.

1. Is the traffic capable of buying?

Open Shopify Analytics or GA4 and break sessions down by source, country and device.

  • Bots and spam inflate sessions with zero engagement. Very short sessions from unexpected countries are a sign.
  • Wrong countries — traffic from markets you do not ship to.
  • Social traffic from content or influencer posts is often browsing, not buying.
  • Broad paid traffic — check what search terms or audiences your ads are paying for. See Google Ads spending money but no sales.

If most traffic is low-intent, the fix is traffic, not the store.

2. Are you sure there are no sales?

Compare Shopify orders with what GA4 or your ad platforms report. If Shopify has orders the platforms cannot see, you have a tracking problem that is hiding real performance — see why GA4 and Shopify report different revenue.

3. Product pages that leave questions unanswered

A first-time visitor needs, without scrolling on a phone: what it is, what it costs, when it arrives, and what happens if it is wrong. Then they need proof — photos that show the real product, reviews, size or fit guidance.

The best source of fixes is the questions customers already ask by email, chat or WhatsApp before buying. Answer those on the product page.

4. Surprise costs at checkout

Unexpected shipping, tax or duties at checkout are one of the most common reasons shoppers abandon a cart. Show delivery cost, or the free-delivery threshold, on the product page and in the cart.

5. Checkout friction

  • Forced account creation.
  • Missing payment methods your customers expect: Shop Pay, Apple Pay, PayPal, Klarna in the UK; UPI and COD in India; Mada, Apple Pay, Tabby or Tamara in Saudi Arabia.
  • A discount-code field that sends people off to search for codes.
  • Errors on mobile autofill.

6. Trust

New stores often look unfinished: no about page, no clear returns policy, no contact details, stock photography, a domain that does not match the brand. None of these matter to repeat customers. All of them matter to the first-time visitor you are paying to attract.

Where to start

If you see… Start with
Very low add-to-cart rate Traffic quality, then product pages
Good add-to-cart, few checkouts Shipping costs and cart
Checkouts started, few completed Checkout and payment methods
Sales in Shopify, none in GA4/ads Tracking

A Shopify CRO audit works through all of this with your data, ranks the fixes and tells you which to test and which simply to fix.

Frequently asked questions

What is a normal conversion rate for a Shopify store?

It varies widely by category, price point, traffic source and device, so benchmarks mislead. Compare your own store over time and by traffic source rather than against an industry average.

Why do people add to cart but not buy?

Most often unexpected shipping costs, comparison shopping, missing payment methods or a slow, awkward mobile checkout.

Will a new theme fix low sales?

Rarely on its own. Traffic quality, product information, shipping clarity and checkout friction usually matter more than design.

How long before I know if changes worked?

For fixes to obvious problems, compare a few weeks before and after. For genuine A/B tests you need enough traffic — see A/B testing with low traffic.
