ChatGPT Ads vs Google Ads

Not a replacement, not a gimmick. How the two differ, where each one fits, and how to decide whether ChatGPT Ads deserve a test budget.

Short answer

Google Ads matches ads to what someone typed into a search box, using keywords you choose. ChatGPT Ads match ads to the context of a conversation, using descriptions you write instead of keywords, and appear below ChatGPT's answer. Google is the proven, high-volume channel for capturing demand; ChatGPT Ads are newer, reach people earlier in their research, and are worth a controlled test once your tracking and Google account are already profitable — not instead of them.

The real difference: keywords vs context

On Google you bid on the words people use. That gives you precise control and precise data: you can see the search term that triggered each click.

In ChatGPT there are no keywords. You describe the situations where your product helps, and the system decides which conversations match. OpenAI is explicit that these hints are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee delivery in a specific conversation. You trade control for reach into conversations that never become a Google search — someone asking which running shoes suit flat feet, or how to choose a CRM for a ten-person team.

Are ChatGPT Ads worth it for e-commerce?

They can be, under three conditions:

  1. Your products are things people research and compare. Considered purchases, specialist products and categories where buyers ask "which one?" suit conversational ads. Commodity, impulse and very cheap products rarely do.
  2. You can measure them. Without the pixel and Conversions API — deduplicated — you will be judging a new channel on its own dashboard. See how to set up ChatGPT Ads conversion tracking.
  3. Your existing channels already work. If Google and Meta are not profitable, the problem is usually tracking, margin or the site, and a new channel adds another place for it to hide.

How to run a fair test

  • Start with CPC, not oCPC, until conversions are tracking reliably and in volume.
  • Pick one product range or service with a clear landing page that answers the question people are likely asking.
  • Write three to five context hints that describe distinct buying situations, so you learn which ones work.
  • Set a fixed test budget and a fixed period, and decide in advance what result would justify continuing.
  • Judge on store or CRM data: new customers, margin, lead quality — not on in-platform metrics alone.

What about cost?

You control the budget. OpenAI suggests starting CPC bids around $3–5 and runs a relevance-weighted second-price auction, so actual click prices vary. Whether that is cheap or expensive depends entirely on what a click is worth to you — which is why the test is judged on break-even ROAS or cost per qualified lead, the same as any other channel.

Should you move budget from Google?

Not yet, for most advertisers. Treat ChatGPT Ads as an incremental test funded separately. If after a fair test it produces customers at a cost you can live with, then compare it with your weakest Google or Meta spend — not your strongest.

Frequently asked questions

Will ChatGPT Ads replace Google Ads?

Not in the foreseeable future. Google captures search demand at enormous scale; ChatGPT Ads reach a different moment in the buying journey. Most advertisers who use both will use them for different jobs.

Can I use my Google Ads keywords in ChatGPT Ads?

Not directly. ChatGPT Ads use context hints, not keywords. Your best-performing search themes are a good starting point for writing hints, but they need rewriting as descriptions of situations.

Are ChatGPT Ads available in my country?

Advertising was live in the US, UK, Canada, much of Europe and India among 41 markets by late August 2026, with India initially through OpenAI's partners. GCC markets were not yet listed at the time of writing.

Who should run a ChatGPT Ads test?

Someone who can set up deduplicated tracking and judge results against your own data. See ChatGPT Ads consulting.
